No Candy in Newton!

Newton, Massachusetts - the textbook definition of liberal entitlement is at it again.  It seems as if the "educators" at the Horace Mann School know what is better for your kids than you do.  And since parents do not know what is right for their kids, lets leave it to the schools to decide.  The Horace Mann School in newton has decided that sugar and candy are not good for your children, so they have banned candy on Valentine's Day.  That is right, no candy in newton on Valentine's Day.  But don't worry, the school has suggested that the students exchange origami, pencils and erasers.  Origami? Are you kidding me?  I can't wait to see the look on my wife's face when I present her with an origami swan. 

Don't even think about bringing these to school on Valentine's Day!

The Newton School sent an email note to parents asking their children not to bring candy or sweets to school on Valentine's Day because last year the students were "inundated with treats."  Oh no, don't let the kids have treats on a special day of the year.  

The school email note also stated that bringing candy was against the school food sharing policy.  I don't even know what to say about a no food sharing policy.  We live in such an age of hypersensitivity and not letting children experience life that "lunch trades" are not even allowed.  Can you picture the lunch police there?  "Hey Johnny, I see you eyeing Mary's Tuna Salad - Don't even try trading your Ham and Swiss for it or you will be in detention for a week!"

Finally, the candy is banned due to the effort of the physical education teacher trying to teach the children to make healthy food choices.  It seems very ironic that this phys ed teacher wants to teach the children choices, yet wants candy ban.  How is this teaching the child choices?  There is no choice for the children.  they are banned from bringing candy so they cannot choose between candy and a healthier food choice.  the only choice being made is the one by Horace Mann school to destroy yet another holiday tradition for children.

Although I do not live in Newton, I would Thank Newton and Horace Mann School for knowing what is better for my child than me.  What do I know?  I am just a lowly parent, I do not have an education degree.  Thank you for making rules and regulations for my child, because I am obviously not capable to do myself.  What would us ignorant parents do to raise our children without the brilliant educators of newton Horace Mann School.

However, even though I realize that school administrators are far more intelligent than parents, I wonder if this is just an anti-capitalism in Massachusetts ploy, since the maker of those little candy hearts, Necco (New England Confectionery Company) is located in Revere.  Maybe by banning these candies, Necco profits will go down, and the company will go out of business, and more people will be out of work, and on the goverment dime.  Governor Patrick would be so proud.
